Bill Simmons: Patriots are the 'worst-coached team' since 1990

Sportswriter Bill Simmons has never held back on saying how he truly feels when it comes to the New England Patriots. He called for the team to start anyone but Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, and went off on coach Jerod Mayo after the team's sixth straight loss on Sunday.

"This is the worst-coached Pats team since Rod Rust. They play all the hits every week -- dumb penalties, drops, special teams mistakes, incredibly poor play calling," Simmons posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. "Each week is worse than the last. You get what you pay for."

Rust went 1-15 in 1990 -- the worst record in franchise history.

The Patriots fell to 1-6 after an ugly 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars -- who also had one win entering Week 7 in London. Ja'Lynn Polk struggled to catch the ball, the defense couldn't stop Jacksonville's run and New England continued to regress since its Week 1 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mayo told reporters after Sunday's loss that the Patriots were a "soft football team across the board." He clarified his comments the following day during his weekly appearance on WEEI saying the team is "playing soft." K.J. Osborn and Polk also appear to be frustrated given their recent social media posts, with the latter getting called out by Mayo who said the team needs more from the second-round pick.

"Hey Mayo, we need more from you actually," Simmons wrote. "Why is your D worse every week? Did Polk jump offside on a PAT to set up a 2 point? Did Polk give up a punt TD? Did Polk call all those (expletive) run plays? You're only good at throwing shade at everyone else -- including the previous coach."

While it's still early in the season, the Patriots hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after Sunday's slate of games. The team has a lot of holes to fill and a lot of problems to fix if they want to rebuild and become a serious playoff contender again.

And while they are facing injuries to some key players on defense, New England has only scored more than 20 points once this season.
