Jon Watts Teases "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" Second Season

Jon Watts Teases "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" Second Season

Earlier this week, Disney released the season finale of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" on Disney+ around the world. The series follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, crossing paths with the likes of Jod Na Nawood, the mysterious character played by Law. Finding their way home -- and meeting unlikely allies and enemies -- will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

Originally, "Skeleton Crew" had been pitched to Lucasfilm as a movie, but as the show's creator, Jon Watts, revealed in an interview with Variety, that by the time he had finished making the three "Spider-Man" movies, Lucasfilm had pivoted to just focusing on making Disney+ series, so "Skeleton Crew" was adapted to an eight-episode limited series.

So far the viewership for the series hasn't been revealed, either by Disney or by any third party such as Nielsen, which could indicate that it's much lower than many previous Star Wars shows, like "The Acolyte" or "The Book Of Boba Fett". It's possible that the viewership for "Skeleton Crew" could improve week after week, especially as there has been lots of strong word of mouth across social media about how good the series is.

However, with Disney drastically cutting back on how many new originals it makes for Disney+ and Lucasfilm refocusing on theatrical releases, the fact that "Skeleton Crew" was billed as a limited series does indicate that it is a one-off. However, we've previously seen Disney adjust plans, as "Shogun" was originally going to be a limited series, but now it will have two more seasons.

During the same interview, the creators were asked if they had spoken with Lucasfilm about the implications of At Attin being revealed to the full galaxy, to which Jon replied:

If you talk about what a second season would look like, there's so many repercussions to all of those things that we did

The interviewer also pushed Jon a little more about the possibility of a second season of "Skeleton Crew", to which he replied:

Yeah, I am. You never really know when you make something and you send it out into the world what people are going to think. But the "Star Wars" fan base is very vocal, as everyone knows, and we've got such positive responses from everyone about this. We just want to make sure as many people see it as possible. We have a lot more stories to tell.

Roger's Take: I really enjoyed "Skeleton Crew", and I'd certainly like to see the story continue in another season, or possibly another series following the events of the show or Jude Law's character, Jod Na Nawood. One of the biggest problems facing a potential second season of "Skeleton Crew" is time. At the time of filming, the kids in the show were around ten years old, but by the time it had been filmed and post-production, those kids were already young teenagers, and if it takes a couple of years to get another season made, we could be looking at a similar situation to what "Stranger Things" fans have had to deal with.

Also, I like the fact that "Skeleton Crew" feels like its own separate story within the larger Star Wars universe and isn't really connected with other shows or films, though the events of the show could always be picked up at some point in the future.
