Tua Tagovailoa's future with the Miami Dolphins and the NFL remains uncertain. While he has every desire to come back following his latest head injury, fears persist that his pro football career might be over.
Should Tagovailoa be unable to return to action, however, the Dolphins apparently have an insurance policy in place that could help them in paying the $124 million remaining in injury guarantees.
Tagovailoa signed a $212.4 million contract in the 2024 offseason, which includes $167 million in injury guarantees ($43 million of which has been paid). The Dolphins have $49.3 million worth of insurance on that contract, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN.
"Specifically, if Tagovailoa suffers a career-ending injury before the 2025 offseason program, the Dolphins have insurance against $30 million of his $42 million signing bonus, $10 million of his 2025 salary and $9.3 million of his 2026 salary," Graziano further detailed.
Tua Tagovailoa has been placed on the injured reserve, which means he'll be out for at least four games. He will be eligible to return by Week 8, although that is dependent on whether he'll be given medical clearance by doctors.
The 26-year-old quarterback will reportedly "seek opinions from multiple independent neurologists before returning to the field," per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.
