We are naturally drawn to water, as it sustains our many needs as humans. Cooking, cleaning, drinking, it is an essential and fragile resource that must be protected. The gentle lapping of a lake shore, or the crush of surf upon a windblown boulder, evoke strong feelings within. The Ripple Light by Rikke Frost for BoConcept is a celebration of the element at it's calmest, a gentle disturbance of liquid, marching repetitively on until all is still.
The Ripple Light arrives flat packed, its body made of concentric hexagonal pieces, held together with unobtrusive black cording. This neatly holds the piece together in a way that allows for space in between the eggshell colored shapes, a rippling regularity held gently in air.
A pendant that offers more at different angles, the diffusion created by the dimmable light is warm. Coziness emanating from the center of the light, the slight tint of the eggshell rather than a stark white is perfect here. Frost shows her refined use of form, opting for simple yet modern finishes that feel so welcome next to Nordic or Japanese design.
Appropriate for any type of interior, be it a lounge, restaurant, dining room, or home office, the Ripple Lamp makes the understated a statement. With different views and angles to discover as one travels around the pendant, there are obvious form markers of stability, yet a weightlessness prevails for an elegant, lofty design. The designer explains, "The black cord enhances the design, adding contrast and highlighting its functionality. What I love most is how the minimalist aesthetic is paired with thoughtful, functional elements, making the lamp not only decorative but highly purposeful."
Frost launched her own design venture in 2004. She explores the simplification of materials and processes, boiling structures down to their most essential components. By removing what is obtrusive or unnecessary, the simplest and most essential distillation of the design is left. "I approach every project with three guiding principles: Minimal, Magical, and Mindful. These values help me focus on choosing materials that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and easy to disassemble at the end of the product's lifecycle," says Frost. "For the Ripple Light, we chose metal because of its longevity and recyclability. Metal is a natural material that can be reprocessed efficiently, reducing waste while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic that enhances the lamp's design."
BoConcept has been a leader in Danish design since 1952, excelling at the simplicity and high level of craftsmanship that the space demands. Started by Jens Ærthøj and Tage Mølholm, everything from the furniture to the workshop was made by hand, to exacting specifications.
