Two women are accused of stealing hundreds from a shopping center and leading law enforcement on a chase while children were in their vehicle, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Dejah and Ajah Thomas face multiple charges including theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, willful cruelty to a child, probation violation and evasion "with wanton disregard for safety," the sheriff's office said.

Deputies on Christmas Eve got a report of a theft at the Sephora in the Lincoln Center shopping area, the sheriff's office said. When deputies spotted the vehicle they were looking for in connection with the theft, they tried pulling the vehicle over.

The sheriff's office said that the driver did not stop and led deputies on a pursuit in the middle of the shopping center's parking lot. With the help of officers from the Stockton Police Department, they stopped the vehicle at Alturas and West Pearl avenues, roughly a mile away from Sephora.

When deputies approached Dejah and Ajah Thomas, the sheriff's office said they noticed three children were in the backseat.

"This reckless behavior demonstrated a complete disregard for community safety and the well-being of the underage individuals present," the sheriff's office said.

Deputies also found $595 worth of items from Sephora.

The sheriff's office did not clarify how the two women and the children are related.
