WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - One of the last places you'd probably expect to take your kids trick or treating is in a cemetery, but Restlawn Memorial Park is encouraging it this weekend.
From tons of cars, Halloween costumes, and of course, lots of candy. 15 cars will be parked in the cemetery, decorated, and those trunks filled with different types of candy. You can even walk through the cemetery, and visit the different themed trunks. Organizers say one reason for the event is to limit lines for the kids. so, they can get that candy fast.
"Here we do not have lines. It is our entire cemetery, about 100 acres, that we are allowing families to walk all around, and you aren't waiting in line. It's a really nice walk with your family," said Heather Carlson, Office Manager, Restlawn Memorial Park.
This is the second annual Trunk or Treat at Restlawn, about 400 people attended in 2023, and they are expecting even more this year. They are expecting over 1,000 people this year. The event is for the whole community
"It is really important for us to remain important in the community. Many times, the cemetery is exiled, if you will, we are out on the north side of town. A lot of times it's a taboo. We can't go to the cemetery for reasons other than mourning. However, that is not true," said Carlson.
Aside from lots of candy, if you get hungry, there will also be a food truck. You'll be able to buy food from Hoehn's Huddle. There will also be a best-dressed vehicle contest for people decorating their trunks.
If you want to come out, the event starts at 1 p.m. Saturday. It will last about two hours. Admission is free.
Restlawn Memorial Park is located at 235962 N Troy St, Wausau.
