Plans are in the works for the annual CROP Walk in Champaign-Urbana, a community-wide interfaith effort to fight hunger and poverty and to relieve suffering from disaster.

A goal to raise $21,000 has been set.

This year's event will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, with walkers traveling a 5K loop starting and ending at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Urbana.

Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will go to organizations fighting hunter in C-U daily -- Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Eastern Illinois Food Bank, Sola Gratia Farm and Wesley Food Pantry.

The remainder of the funds raised will go to wherever the need is greatest.

With CROP Walk, hundreds of service organizations are coordinating their efforts, helping those who need it most.

Currently, thousands of people in Gaza are starving and homeless. The funds will also assist refugees from Ukraine, as well as provide extensive hunger and poverty relief in several African countries and elsewhere.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.
