Lewis Hamilton tests Ferrari F1 car for first time

Lewis Hamilton got behind the wheel of a Ferrari Formula One car for the first time in a test for his new team on Wednesday.

It was announced in February the seven-time world champion would be joining Ferrari ahead of the 2025 F1 season, ending his 11 years with Mercedes.

Hamilton, 40, arrived at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters for his official first day on Monday and met with team principal Fred Vasseur and Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna.

On Wednesday he was pictured out on the team's Fiorano circuit in Fiorano Modenese, wearing his famous yellow helmet and driving Ferrari's 2023 car.

"There are some days that you know you'll remember forever and today, my first as a Scuderia Ferrari HP driver, is one of those days," Hamilton said on Monday.

"I've been lucky enough to have achieved things in my career I never thought possible, but part of me has always held on to that dream of racing in red. I couldn't be happier to realise that dream today.

"Today we start a new chapter in the history of this iconic team, and I can't wait to see what story we will write together."

Hamilton's switch to Ferrari in February brought together the most successful driver and most successful team in F1 history and is considered one of the biggest driver transfer shocks the sport has known.

He will race alongside Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025.

The 2025 F1 season begins on March 14 with the Australian Grand Prix.

The F1 world has been waiting almost a year to get a first glimpse of Lewis Hamilton in the famed red of Ferrari. Previously a far-flung dream that he never expected to realize, since announcing his shock move on February 1 last year, Hamilton will have been longing for this moment.

On a foggy day at Ferrari's Fiorano test track at its Maranello headquarters, Hamilton finally got to live his dream, sitting behind the wheel of the red car for the first time. To see him wear the red overalls and his iconic number 44 on a Ferrari car will take some getting used to. We've only been able to guess what it may look like through best attempts at photoshops of him into the red suit. But this first actual glimpse is a major moment in recent F1 history; the start of a partnership between the sport's most iconic team and, arguably, its most iconic driver.

Today's test run will only offer Hamilton minimal feedback, given it is just a limited private test run in a two-year car. But it will at least allow him to adjust to the processes of the Ferrari car -- things like how the steering wheel works and what the power delivery feels like from the engine -- as well as getting to know his new teammates and engineers.

Perhaps most importantly, for the loyal Tifosi that braved the cold to wait outside the gates of the track in order to get a peek of Hamilton, it's a first chance for them to greet and celebrate their new hero. The driver it once considered a rival is now who they will be cheering on for wins and championships.
