GLASGOW, Ky. - Tucked away in the heart of Glasgow lies the sweetest place to be during the holiday season -- Sweetheart Bakery.
But behind the scenes of this well-oiled machine, especially during Christmas, there's a whirlwind of activity. "Absolute chaos. It's insane," says Lynsey Wood, the manager and decorator.
Savannah Dick, a baker at the bakery, echoes the sentiment: "It is crazy. It is so crazy."
One of the driving forces behind the bakery's holiday buzz is the overwhelming demand for their delicious cookies.
"It's in the thousands," Wood says. "This year has been just, like, cookie crazy."
Sweetheart Bakery offers a range of delectable options, from sweet almond joy to ravishing red velvet, extraordinary oatmeal and the town's favorite - tea cookies. The variety seems endless.
Erika Boone, one of the decorators, shares how the cookies often surprise people.
"Sometimes your favorite is not, I guess, what you'd expect it to be," Boone says.
When stepping up to the counter, customers sometimes face a difficult decision.
"They usually just ask Crystal to make them a nice tray," says Lynsey, laughing. The bakery's extensive cookie selection can be overwhelming, and many rely on the staff's expertise to make the perfect choice.
Part of the charm of Sweetheart Bakery is how it lightens the load for people during the busy holiday season.
"A lot of people don't want to do it themselves," Wood says. "It's easier, you know, and it's nice for us to have a creative outlet. We get to create and make people happy."
Wood also shares how baking comes with a personal touch that commercial products can't match, saying, "Homemade tastes better, you know, there's love in it."
For the staff, the magic of Christmas cookies lies in the details.
"I just really love the Christmas vibes," Wood says. "I love the colors, the sparkles, and all the fun."
At Sweetheart Bakery, the holiday season isn't just about delicious treats -- it's about spreading joy, one cookie at a time.
