Syracuse, N.Y. -- A travel nurse working in Syracuse was arrested Thursday after deputies said she stole and used patients' credit cards.
Kelly Churney, 46, of Auburn, was arrested after thefts were reported at Upstate Community Hospital and Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation Center and Nursing, according to Thomas Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.
On Dec. 9, deputies were called to the rehab center for a report of credit card theft involving a patient, he said. The patient's family reported the credit card had unauthorized charges made in four counties, he said.
Deputies later learned that Churney was responsible for the theft, he said.
She was a travel nurse assigned to work at Upstate by a temporary staffing agency. She had been working at the hospital since October, Newton said.
While Churney was arrested by Upstate University police, they found multiple credit cards that belonged to current and recently discharged patients at Upstate Community Hospital.
Churney was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and identity theft. She is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
Deputies ask patients who suspect they were theft victims during Churney's employment to contact the sheriff's Major Crimes Unit at 315-435-3081.
