Edgar Berlanga Being Swamped By Fans In Mexico - Boxing News 24

Edgar Berlanga was overwhelmed by admirers on a vacation in Mexico. Adoring fans recognized the former super middleweight world title challenger after his recent clash against Canelo Alvarez.

Fans wanted to take pictures with the 27-year-old Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs), who went the 12-round distance against the superstar Canelo on September 14th, losing by a unanimous decision by the scores 118-109, 117-110, and 118-109. The performance by the Brooklyn, New York native showed that a fighter can become famous by being competitive against Canelo and not getting knocked out.

Berlanga feels he's going to be the next PPV star in the super middleweight division. He wants to capture a world title and has shown interest in going the IBF route to face the winner of the William Scull vs. Vladimir Shishkin clash.

However, the IBF's 10-lb rehydration rule could be an obstacle for Berlanga fighting for that belt, as he reportedly rehydrated to 193 lbs for his fight against Canelo Alvarez. It might be physically impossible for Berlanga to keep from rehydrating 20+ lbs after making weight for the 168-lb division.

What Berlanga could do is move up to 175 to make it easier for him to make weight, but he likely wouldn't match up well against undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.

Berlanga's promoter, Eddie Hearn, has talked recently about having him take a tune-up next in his parent's country of Puerto Rico. He's treated like a superstar there despite not being Puerto Rican. 38-year-old journeyman Gabriel Rosado has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Berlanga's tune-up.

Berlanga said he wanted to fight Jaime Munguia next, and he feels that a fight between them would do big numbers on PPV. He mentions that it would be another Mexico vs. Puerto Rico type of fight. Other than Munguia, Berlanga would like to fight Jermall Charlo, who has fought only once in the last three years and past his prime at 34.
